The Steel Band

The Pioneer Windrush generation grew up hearing Steel bands in the Caribbean, so it was no surprise that DWIA booked a steel band for its Jamaica Independence Dinner and Dance on 7th August 1964. Over the forthcoming years DWIA booked a number of steel bands to play at various DWIA social events including All Stars Steel Orchestra (London).

DWIA created a sub-committee spearheaded by committee member Mr George Mighty to develop DWIA steel band project the primary aim was to raise funds to purchase a full steel pan set.

1976 September - DWIA received a letter from the Community Relations Council informing them the funding application was unsuccessful. DWIA carried on their fundraising campaign and contact was made with which include Charlie Williams Britain's first well-known black stand-up comedian as seen on TV) who has agreed to attend coffee evening as part of the fundraising activities.

1978 February - A letter from East Midlands Arts Association (now known as Arts Council England -ACE) confirming DWIA funding application had progress pass stage one. The application was successful

1979 January - At DWIA AGM committee member Mr Mighty reported to members that the steel band sub-committee had purchased the steel drums and sub-committee members were seeking to raise funds to employ a full-time teacher for the band

1984 July - West Indian Cricket Team (WI) visited Derby to play Derbyshire cricket club over two days 21-22nd July. The WI team were the guest of honour at DWIA on Saturday 21st charity dance The Littleover steel band performed on the night.

1987 - Derby Carnival week was delivered that consisted of a range of activities during the week including a carnival exhibition and a steel band Show on Wednesday 9th September

With the generational change saw a drop in volunteer players however the DWICA keep the project in mind with the view to re-establish a DWICA steel band.

In 2018 /19 working in partnership with EMCCAN developed a pilot scheme for those who had expressed an interest in playing steel pans. This proved to be successful, and plans are being developed to re-establish DWICA steel pan orchestra.
